Cupping therapy has been made popular by modern day elite athletes; however it is a traditional, time-honored practice from the East. Born out of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, today’s Myofascial therapists have come to utilize this technique of negative pressure rather than tissue compression as an adjunct to healing. Historically, it has been used to alleviate discomfort in musculoskeletal, dermal, digestive, and psychological conditions.
Cupping massage is a safe and non-invasive modality that uses suction cups to create decompression, rather than tissue compression. This decompression helps relieve aching muscles and joint stiffness, reduce inflammation and provide relief for many acute and chronic conditions. While some people find cupping to be a unique experience, others find it to be very enjoyable and quite relaxing.
IPT utilizes both sliding cupping to mobilize and release tissue restrictions as well as static cupping to detoxify the tissue. IPT calls the technique myofascial cupping and uses it to bring healthy blood flow to the injured tissues to aid in the healing process, while also drawing toxins away from the area.
